Is it something I should have checked out before it causes more damage?

There is an air shifted slave cyl under the top trans cover ,its a dirty job ,and a bit hard to stab it back .
But the average farmer could change the "o" rings on it .
You need to do this or have it done. Because if that is the problem it will take out the synchronizer letting it grind like that over and over. It could also be the air line to the shifter plugged and not letting it shift quick enough. May be too late either way.

There is a little air powered cylinder that shifts the transmission from high to low - (think planter markers high is down ,low is up )
This little cylinder will leak and not make a full shift ,and grind the syncros .
The top cover on the transmission has to come off ,what is hard is putting the top back on ,getting all the shift forks stabbed .
It is a tough job ob the first one you do ,but ill bet a truck shop would charge at least 1000 to do the job .
