1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu
If you're confused as to why people refer to Chevelles and Malibusas the same car, it's because Malibu was a trim level of theChevelle from 1964 to 1977. The Malibu wasn't a separate modeluntil 1978. No Chevelles originally had a woodgrain console. If yousee one with a woodgrain console now, it's likely from a MonteCarlo. There was a version of the Chevelle only available in Canadathat had a slightly different grille and trim. It was called thePontiac Beaumont.
If you are going to grab a bowtie Chevelle, 1970 is definitely theyear to have. Chevrolet got it all right for this year with thelines, trims and power combination. Our consignment gets it allright with a frame off restoration, all new panels wearing a snappycolor change from green to orange, air ride suspension, a LS engineswap and beautiful trimmings and of course it's a 1970. Plenty ofWOW factor in this one so read on, and then come and get it!
Exterior
Near perfect Atomic Orange drapes this car's steel panels whichmind their gaps very nicely. Black painted stripes race from frontto back and are only broken up by the solid orange painted top, which is also pristine. Dual headlights along with a dual stackedchrome rimmed openings of the grille highlight the blackhorizontalribbings within. A lower mirror like bumper and the dualrear facing cowl induction hood grace this 1970 masterpiece. Ashout out to the rear bumper with the inset tail lights within aflush mount bumper on the rear of the car, all shiny and new aswell. This bottoms off a gracefully sloping downward rear glass andtrunk lid which when viewed from the side is THE reason for thevisual preference of the 1970 model year. Speaking of the glass,it's near perfect with dark tinting and excellentstainlesssurrounds, which add perfectly to the sinister vibe. 20-inchmulti-spoke Diablo wheels are all around and wrapped by low profile255/40ZR20 radials from the 28th week of 2017 on all 4 corners.
Interior
You'll be seeing black on this interior with just fabulous factorystyle black door panels that are nearly showroom, wonderfulcharcoal black Camaro ZR1 leather and suede buckets up front thathave some orange stitching and ZL1 embroidery in the headrests fora little extra interest. A rear bench provides room for 2 more andagain is from a Camaro showing in 2+2 bucket style format. Thispaves the way for the pristine black carpeting that is flooding thefloors. A black padded vinyl topper covers the dash and the fronthouses the standard elongated rectangle sweep speedometer with arow of warning lights below. To the left is the controller for theRideTech adjustable air ride system which can also be controlledvia a phone app and to the driver's right is the display unit forthe Holley Terminator X EFI system. The factory heater slides andupgraded AM/FM/Bluetooth stereo are here as well. Fronting thissnappy dash is a flat bottom NRG Innovations rally style steeringwheel atop the factory steering column. As for the headliner...youguessed it more pristine black vinyl with vent holes throughout.Just really well done and preserved inside and a beautiful contrastto the orange exterior. Not to be overlooked is the truck with itscustom black carpet liner, stereo amp, and speaker box.
Drivetrain
A great looking drivetrain is in the glossy charcoal gray paintedengine bay and is modern 5.3 liter LS V8. Holley Terminator X EFIwith Holley injectors, a stage 3 camshaft, and red high voltageignition wires add to the mechanical jewelry, and it just goes onand on. A 3-speed TH400 transmission is on back and this sendspower to a 12-bolt axle bringing up the back. All in very nicecondition.
Undercarriage
Clean and rust free nearly as close to like new as you can getthanks to all new floors from the firewall back. This is supportedby a solid and rust free frame finished in an industrial silverthat has independentsuspension with adjustable airbags up front, and a 4 link with airbags in the rear, both courtesy of RideTech.Power disc brakes are all around and shiny headers snake their waydown from the LS mill and join up with stainless steel pipedFlowmaster muffler equipped exhaust with chrome tips peeking outunder the rear bumpers. Just a wonderfully restored and upgradedpresentation here.
Drive-Ability
As usual with these early 1970's Chevrolet muscle cars, mydecoder/editor and I clamor to drive these, so we flipped a coinand it landed on its side, so we both drove it! (One of the manybennies working at CAM). Anyway, she fired right up with a roar, and we were speeding our way to the test track. Here we found thiscar to be in ship shape mechanically, running smoothly, accelerating with no end, and cornering like a big lumbering musclecar from 1970. We noted the speedometer and odometer werenon-functional during our drive, but the comfy modern ZR1 seatsmore than made up for it. While Classic Auto Mall represents thatthese functions were working at the time of our test drive, wecannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time ofyour purchase.
Restoration and modifications are a wonderful thing, especiallywhen it is done to this level, and this one will not let you down.Near retina burning Inferno Orange paint, custom Diablo wheels, wide black stripes, a 5.3 liter LS engine, along with air ridesuspension and Holley EFI all come together to make a winner. Likethe original, all the boxes are checked and the i's are dotted aswell as t's crossed on this one, so come and get it, it will slideout of here very fast, just like it handled our test track.
